Briefing

The Briefing

Week of October 5, 2026. Issue 15.

A quiet news week with two items that clear the 14-day cutoff: a fresh CMS data collection notice open for comment, and a new qualitative study on families who go through intensive care to facilitate organ donation.

01

CMS opens a 60-day comment window on a proposed information collection under the Paperwork Reduction Act.

CMS published a notice on September 29 inviting public comment on a planned information collection, including its necessity, the accuracy of the estimated reporting burden, and ways to reduce that burden through technology. The agency is specifically asking whether the data it wants is useful and whether the time estimates are realistic.

On your shift. Documentation and reporting burden lands directly on coordinators, so this is your chance to tell CMS where the paperwork estimates are wrong before they get locked in.

02

New qualitative study examines how families experience intensive care provided specifically to facilitate organ donation.

Published October 7, this analysis looks at donor relatives' perceptions when a patient is kept in intensive care to make donation possible. It digs into how families understood and felt about that period, which sits at the heart of the consent and authorization conversation.

On your shift. This is direct evidence about the family experience you manage every case, and it can sharpen how you frame intensive care measures during authorization talks.
