The Briefing

Week of October 19, 2026. Issue 17.

Three recent studies touch on the technical and ethical edges of your work this week: apnea testing physiology, machine perfusion for pediatric kidneys, and the hard problem of consent for unrepresented patients.

01

New in vivo study maps electrolyte shifts during apnea testing acid-base changes.

Researchers tracked how electrolytes redistribute during the acute respiratory acid-base swings that occur in apnea testing. The work adds detail to what happens physiologically when a patient is pushed into hypercarbia during brain death determination.

On your shift. Apnea testing is a step you coordinate directly, and understanding the electrolyte picture helps you anticipate instability and communicate clearly with the testing physician.

02

Review looks at machine perfusion as the next step for pediatric kidney transplantation.

A new review examines where machine perfusion technology stands for pediatric renal transplant and what the near-term frontier looks like. It frames perfusion as a growing part of how these smaller, higher-stakes organs may be preserved and assessed.

On your shift. If your OPO handles pediatric kidneys, expect more perfusion-driven decisions on viability, which changes recovery timing and the questions transplant centers will ask you during placement.

03

Education intervention tests ways to raise living donation awareness in American Muslim communities.

Using the Theory of Planned Behavior, researchers ran a pre-post evaluation of a living donation education program built for American Muslim communities. The study looks at how targeted, culturally grounded education shifts attitudes and intent around donation.

On your shift. Family conversations are easier when community-level understanding already exists, and this points to approaches your authorization and outreach teams can borrow for specific populations.
