The Briefing

Week of November 2, 2026. Issue 19.

A quieter week, with research leading: a new Australian study on cancer transmission from deceased donors, a paper on donation education in high schools, and a new UNOS report on social determinants of health in transplant patient populations.

01

Australian linkage study examines cancer transmission from deceased donors using referral data.

Researchers in Australia linked deceased donor referral records with population data to examine how often cancer is transmitted from donors to recipients. Because the work starts at the referral stage, it can capture donors whose cancer history came up early in the process. The full paper was published October 27.

On your shift. A donor's cancer history is a common reason a case slows down or organs get declined, so data on actual transmission risk shapes how centers respond to offers. It is also a reminder that a thorough, well-documented history at referral carries real weight downstream.

02

New paper looks at bringing organ donation education to high school students.

A study published October 29 focuses on reaching the next generation with donation education during and after high school. It looks at how early exposure might shape awareness and registration decisions before people reach adulthood.

On your shift. Some of the hardest family conversations happen when no one knew what the donor wanted. Earlier education could mean more families arriving at that conversation already aware of their loved one's wishes, and it may be useful for teams doing community outreach.

03

UNOS releases a social determinants of health report for transplant patient populations.

UNOS published its SDOH Report on October 21, designed to give programs a clearer picture of the social and economic factors affecting the patients they serve. The report is aimed at helping teams understand who is reaching the waitlist and who may be facing barriers along the way.

On your shift. Access gaps upstream affect who ends up receiving the organs your cases produce. For OPO staff working on hospital development or community trust, this data can help explain which communities are underserved and why.
