Description
This position is responsible for supporting the entire organ donation process from referral through to organ recovery in accordance with the Mission of the organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
DONOR COORDINATION
- Maintains an on-call schedule of approximately twelve to fifteen 24-hour call days per month (50% call).
- Routinely provides onsite response for donor referrals, collaborating with hospital staff and physicians to ensure appropriate action, maintain the option for donation, and facilitate neurologic testing as needed.
- Manages and documents organ referral calls from referring hospitals to evaluate potential donors, answer questions, and develop a plan for action with the Administrator on Call (AOC).
- Evaluates medical suitability of potential organ donors, utilizing information from medical records, history and physical examination, and current health status.
- Screens potential donors with physician partners as requested by the AOC.
- Collaborates with the AOC to determine a plan of action for following potential donor cases, deferral of non-eligible donor referrals or activation of the Family Services Coordinator for offering potential donor families the option of donation in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
- Routinely initiates newly authorized organ donor cases, including initial blood draws, initiating order sets and chart entry.
- Routinely provides support to OPTC staff with donor management, and chart preparation both in the hospital environment and the Donor Care Unit (DCU).
- In conjunction with the Organ AOC and on call Intensivist, may independently facilitate management of authorized organ donors at donor hospitals until OPTC staff become available.
- Assists the OPTC in coordinating the logistics of an authorized donor case.
- Collaborates with the OPTC Staff to facilitate communications regarding donor suitability.
- Facilitates timely organ donation discussions in urgent situations, ensuring the next-of-kin is presented with the opportunity in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
- Supports the organ recovery process by independently completing unscrubbed duties such as organ flush, packaging of organs, communication and documentation when needed.
- Performs all non-sterile aspects of kidney preservation pump management.
- Facilitates the import of organs from outside the MTN service area, communicates with the accepting local transplant surgeon, MTN laboratory, and confirms transportation of the imported organ to the appropriate transplant center.
- Accompanies local transplant surgeons and independently performs responsibilities needed to ensure organs are successfully recovered and transported to the appropriate transplant center, such as organ preservation and flush, packaging and labeling, and donor documentation review on organ cases recovered outside the MTN donor service area.
- Independently prepares and processes pathology specimens for organ biopsy in the DCU.
- Conducts all aspects of the donation process in compliance with established federal and state laws, AOPO and AATB standards, UNOS and FDA guidelines, CDC and MTN policies.
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Completes donor case follow-up and required quality assurance responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintains compliance with documentation practices and MTN Policies and Procedures.
